Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that is caused by the electrical circuitry in your heart not working like it used to. Symptoms of atrial fibrillation range from chest pain, shortness of breath, fluttering heart beat and fatigue. Atrial fibrillation is the most common of heart rhythm conditions and is estimated to affect about 300,000 Canadians. The exact cause has not been fully uncovered but experts are aware of certain risk factors that cause or trigger atrial fibrillation. These risk factors range anywhere from a person with obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure, a person who smokes, is obese or has a family history of atrial fibrillation and age; the older we get, the higher the risk.

Atrial fibrillation like many other heart conditions is linked to the way that you live your life. One of the best things that anyone can do to lower their risk of Afib, heart disease and stroke is to remove as many of the risk factors as possible. Here are some tips in preventing these heart conditions; keep a healthy weight by eating right, exercise regularly, don’t smoke or quit smoking, if you have certain conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol make sure they are properly controlled.
